Second Grade through College Level Orators Sought to Compete in MLK Event

MLKBOWIE, MD – SPEAK! MD Oratory League, Inc. is challenging area students from Va., Md., and D.C. in grades 2 through college levels to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by presenting excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches (Grades 2-5) and original oratory based on grade appropriate pre-selected questions (Grades 6 – college). Orators will participate in the second annual Dr. MLK Oratory Competition on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012 at the Publick Playhouse in Cheverly, Md., at 1 p.m. Registration ends Dec. 31, 2011.

Community/business leaders have volunteered to judge the orator’s presentations. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at each level – elementary, middle, high school and college – will earn cash awards sponsored by Paper Tiger of Alexandria, VA, The Links of Prince Georges County, MD, Attorney Vanessa Scott of Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan LLP of Washington, DC, and Frontline Security Services of Landover, MD.

“As our children grow and prepare for the future, it is important that they are equipped with the ability to express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions in a clear and concise way,” Co-Founder Shonette Grant said. “The Oratory Competition is a means to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. one of the greatest orators our world has ever known, while also providing a positive venue for students to demonstrate their commitment to the fulfillment of his dream.”

The competition has successfully involved community members from a variety of the business community throughout Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia area.

We are grateful to have Mrs. Edith Johnson, Vice President of E.M. Johnson and Associates, an architectural firm in Washington, DC serve as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the SPEAK! 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Competition – the premier event for young people to honor the legacy of Dr. King.
