Oxford Hosts First Nautical Festival and Flea Market

oxtownPORT OF OXFORD, MARYLAND HOSTS
ITS FIRST ANNUAL NAUTICAL FESTIVAL AND FLEA MARKET

Nestled on the Eastern Shore, the Town of Oxford, Maryland is tiny, family-friendly, and loaded with history, heritage, charm, and entertainment.

There a variety of thrilling races and regattas throughout the season … plus the town was just named one of the Top 50 Waterfront Towns in the World by readers of Yachting Magazine … and the Oxford Business Association has been given the green light to hold the First Annual Port of Oxford Nautical Festival and Flea Market.

An all-day event to be held on the grounds of the Town Soccer Field on Saturday, September 3, 2011, the flea market will host businesses,non-profit organizations, and private residents selling all manner of nautically-themed items: arts and crafts, boats, new and used marine parts, fishing gear, dock accessories, clothing, and even marine services.

In addition to the market, festival-goers will enjoy the offerings of food vendors; seafood cook-offs; marine exhibits and displays; and – this being Talbot County — a crab feast, of course, (provided by The Masthead at Pier Street Marina), complete with live entertainment (provided by local favorite “Three Penny Opera”). With proceeds being donated to the Watermen’s Association, tickets to the evening’s festivities are going fast already!

Visitors would do well to make it a weekend by spending Friday and Saturday nights enjoying the hospitality of a B&B or transient slip at one of the town’s many marinas, then Sunday lounging in the shady town park on the banks of the Tred Avon River; visiting the Treasure Chest, a visitors center and gift shop featuring local and artisanal treasures; having a ride on the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry; biking down the sun-dappled streets; and savoring a treat from the Highland Creamery after dining at one of several fine local restaurants.

The sights and stories of this little town with a long history and an even bigger heart – not to mention cultural offerings, recreational opportunities, and fine lodging and dining options – promise to entertain the whole family any season of the year … but never with a better backdrop than the many sails of summertime.
