Tactics for the ADHD homework wars

ADHD homeworkBy Allison Eatough

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) makes homework hard for everyone.

If there's a reason to walk away from his homework, Donald "Doc" Moreland will find it. Bathroom breaks. Pencil sharpening. Snack time.

"Homework's a challenge with Doc," says Jeanne Tobia, the 9-year-old's mother. "He will find 25 different reasons to go do something else."

But that's not because the Crofton Elementary School student dislikes his assignments. Doc has ADHD, a common condition where children have a range of challenges, including difficulty staying focused and paying attention, impulsive behavior and hyperactivity.

Homework is especially difficult for children with ADHD, says Dr. Mark Mahone, director of the Department of Neuropsychology at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore. At the end of the school day, most of them are exhausted, he says.

Travis Pastrana masters fatherhood in the fast lane

Annapolis native and action sports legend Travis Pastrana has landed a double back flip on a motorcycle, jumped out of an airplane without a parachute, won the Moto-X Freestyle event at the X-Games and recently crushed the historic Mt. Washington Hillclimb motorsports race in under six minutes. But he admits that nothing compares to the thrill of when he became a father for the first time four years ago.

Catching up with Ravens Benjamin Watson

Baltimore Ravens tight end Benjamin Watson is fielding a lot these days — with five kids (ages 1-8), a parenting book for dads just published and a professional football career still underway at age 36. We caught up with Watson earlier this summer to find out how he juggles it all, why he wrote the book and the hardest thing about being a dad and football player.

How kids can to break into acting

Is your child an aspiring young actor trying to break into the field? Then they'd be smart listen to Jillian Lebling for advice.

The 11-year-old Maryland native has played Tom Hanks’ daughter in Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies,” was in the hit Broadway musical “Once,” and has appeared in the television series “The Blacklist” with James Spader.
