A Teen’s Guide to Parents on Social Media

It’s a battle for the ages . . . the “In My Day” crowd versus the “Kids These Days” and all their new fangled gadgets. We thought since we gave a voice to the parents this month in our Adulting 101 feature, we should give equal air time to the teens in our lives, letting them share tips with parents on how to communicate effectively using technology and social media.

Adulting 101

So, you’re heading off to college in the fall. What will life be like outside of your parents’ house? With the freedom that college affords comes the responsibility of taking care of yourself and your education. We’ve been there, and here’s what we wish we had known before heading off to school!

Putting the You in YouTube

Since YouTube’s inception in 2005, when the site’s co-founder Jawed Karim posted a video of himself standing in front of elephants at the zoo (aptly named “Me at the zoo”), the platform has skyrocketed. In those 13 years, YouTube videos have put our emotions through the ringer, sending us into fits of hysterical laughter or ugly crying. We’ve also learned useful skills like how to fix a garbage disposer or apply eye shadow properly.

Tactics for the ADHD homework wars

ADHD homeworkBy Allison Eatough

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) makes homework hard for everyone.

If there's a reason to walk away from his homework, Donald "Doc" Moreland will find it. Bathroom breaks. Pencil sharpening. Snack time.

"Homework's a challenge with Doc," says Jeanne Tobia, the 9-year-old's mother. "He will find 25 different reasons to go do something else."

But that's not because the Crofton Elementary School student dislikes his assignments. Doc has ADHD, a common condition where children have a range of challenges, including difficulty staying focused and paying attention, impulsive behavior and hyperactivity.

Homework is especially difficult for children with ADHD, says Dr. Mark Mahone, director of the Department of Neuropsychology at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore. At the end of the school day, most of them are exhausted, he says.
