Prince George’s County families can get their students ready for school at the annual Back-to-School Fair Saturday, Aug. 9.
The community event provides parents and students with access to resources for a successful school year. There will be on-site student registration, school supplies and school uniforms for purchase, student performances and new this year, free on-site immunizations. There will also be the highly anticipated backpack giveaway.
Representatives will be available from various Prince George’s schools, offices and county agencies throughout the day. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Show Place Arena, 14900 Pennsylvania Ave. in Upper Marlboro.
Backpack Giveaway Information: Students are required to attend the fair in order to receive a ticket for a free backpack. To redeem the backpack, students must visit a school display, an office display and a vendor display and have the representatives initial the ticket. They should then bring the ticket to the Backpack Giveaway station to receive the backpack. One backpack per child, and backpacks will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Registration is not required.
Vaccination Information: New school immunizations are required for the 2014-2015 school year for students entering kindergarten and grade 7. These new vaccination requirements are in addition to the current school immunization requirements.
PGCPS Health Services will be administering free varicella vaccines to students entering kindergarten and free meningococcal and Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis/whooping cough) vaccines to students entering grade 7. The first day of school in PG County is Tuesday, Aug. 26. A pre-kindergarten and kindergarten orientation day is Aug. 1. A systemic orientation for students entering middle or high school is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 25. Parents will receive a schedule of events from their child’s school. Students entering middle school in the 6th or 7th grades and high school in the 9th grade for the first time will attend an all-day program at their schools.
