Recycle Plastic Film at Goodwill

Recycle Plastic Film at Goodwill in a Partnership with Trex, a First-of-its-Kind Partnership

Trex – the world’s largest composite decking company – has partnered with Goodwill of the Chesapeake and two neighboring Goodwill organizations to collect and recycle plastic film that will be used to manufacture decking products.

What is Plastic Film?

Plastic film is historically the most difficult type of plastic to recycle. As a rule of thumb, any clean, dry plastic film that you can push your thumb through can be recycled under this new initiative. Examples include single-use plastic bags, e-Commerce mailers, bubble wrap and air cushions, and dry cleaning bags. A comprehensive list of plastic film that can be recycled under the initiative is available online at https://www.goodwillches.org/trex/.

The Goodwill organizations – which serve Maryland, the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, Delaware and Delaware County, PA – anticipate that the program will divert more than 300,000 pounds of plastic film in 2022 and 2023, significantly reducing plastic pollution in landfills and unregulated dump sites.

Trex Partnership with Goodwill

“Our collaborative plastic film recycling partnership with Trex is the first of its kind in the nonprofit Goodwill Industries network,” says Lisa Rusnyiak, President & CEO of Goodwill of the Chesapeake. “It‘s also a first step in a multi-layered, collaborative approach for the three Goodwill organizations.

“We envision that working together, our sustainability initiatives will do more for our communities than reduce the amount of plastics sent to landfills and littering neighborhoods and wildlife habitats,” Rusnyiak says. “Ultimately, our initiatives will generate new employment opportunities, in alignment with the Goodwill mission.”

Members of the public can drop off plastic film refuse at any of Goodwill of the Chesapeake’s 30 retail locations in Baltimore and nine surrounding counties.

Trex composite decking is made of 95 percent recycled plastic film and reclaimed wood. The typical 500 square-foot composite Trex deck contains more than 140,000 recycled plastic bags, films and wraps. Trex has the largest market share of composite decking in North America and leads the industry on a global scale, with more than $1.2 billion in annual sales.
