Report on Maryland education shows large disparities

Maryland CANMaryland schools continue to have one of the largest achievement gaps in the country, according to The Maryland Campaign for Achievement Now’s ‘State of Maryland Public Education’ report.

The report, which was released Wednesday, found that less than half of Maryland 8th graders read at grade level, and that Maryland’s black and Latino 8th graders are more than 30 percentage points behind their white peers in reading and math.

“Maryland’s ranking as the  No.1 school system in the country continues to hide our growing achievement gap, all while the demand for higher quality schools goes unmet,” said MarylandCAN Executive Director Curtis Valentine.
