Romantic Dinners Around Annapolis for Valentine’s Day

romantic_dinner Fear not, those of you wanting to restore date night in your relationship!

by Nicole White

Six weeks into the New Year and I’m already making excuses not to go to the gym.  This means of course that I am six weeks into self-loathing while watching my significant other drop pounds like a Labrador shedding its winter coat.  Perhaps you are the one who has dropped a few of those holiday pounds (bonus points if that is the case.)  I however, prefer the road less traveled and chose not to be a New Year’s Resolution cliché a la weight loss.   No, no.  I resolve to bring back date night!

After securing a babysitter for our two and a half year old son, I choose to forgo my Spanx and enjoy an evening of tasty dining with my husband at one of these favorite local joints…

Lures Bar and Grille
1397 Generals Highway
Crownsville, MD
410-923-1606
luresbarandgrille.com

Lures is a quaint hideaway complete with a fantastic outdoor patio, perfect for enjoying a sampling of their rotating craft brews, while taking in some tunes of local musicians on Friday and Saturday evenings.  You must not leave without savoring the seared ahi tuna off the starters menu.  I also highly recommend the fish tacos, and if you’re not a fish fan, you can always go with “The Best Turkey Sandwich Ever,” no lie.  Lures Bar and Grille offers a spectacular menu that is well worth the drive to Crownsville.

Joss Café and Sushi Bar
195 Main Street
Annapolis, MD
410-263-4688

Located directly on Main Street in downtown Annapolis, Joss is a terrific spot to dine for sushi fans.  Be prepared for an enthusiastic greeting upon entering this seemingly small Japanese café.  With an eclectic menu offering deliciously fresh sushi rolls such as the Chesapeake roll and the dynamite roll (two of my personal favorites), Joss can accommodate you and your date at the sushi bar or at an intimate table in one of their two dining rooms.  If raw fish and squid makes you squirm, fear not, Joss also offers a full Japanese menu complete with daily specials.

Paul’s Homewood Café
919 West Street
Annapolis, MD
410-267-7891

Annapolis’ oldest family-owned restaurant can be found on West Street, and offers a mix of Greek home cooking and New American cuisine, as well as an extensive wine menu.  A recently renovated bar and dining area provides for a quiet setting while you and your significant other devour the lamb shank and then some homemade baklava.  Paul’s Homewood Café proudly features new and prominent art work each month.

Rams Head Tavern
33 West Street
Annapolis, MD
410-268-4545
ramsheadtavern.com

If you’re in the mood for some tasty delights in a little bit more boisterous of a setting, head to Rams Head Tavern.  Wet your palate during happy hour, from 4 til 7 pm, and nosh on some thick sliced brew pub onion rings.  With Rams Head On Stage operating just next door, you can take in a concert on nearly any night during the year, or scope out the comfortable and more intimate outdoor patio, complete with heat lamps.  Share a “bangin salmon BLT” with your sweetheart, the portions are rather large, and you may have little room left after those onion rings.

Level Small Plates Lounge
69 West Street
Annapolis, MD
410-268-0003
levelsmallplateslounge.com

With their philosophy being “eat. drink. socialize,” Level offers handcrafted cocktails (I recommend the cucumber margarita) in a swanky atmosphere that takes you out of the everyday and places you in the moment.  Simply prepared regional comfort food provided on yummy little plates allows for you and your date to sample an assortment of fresh, local flavors.  Start yourself off with an apple and arugula salad, followed by whole grain mustard gnocchi, then savor the lamb osso bucco prepared “mediterranean style.”  Don’t be fooled; the plates may be little, but you and your loved one will leave satisfied on a multitude of levels.

Fear not, those of you wanting to restore date night in your relationship!  All you need to do is snag a sitter for the kidlets and choose one of these five fantastic venues for your dining pleasure.   Don’t fret about the clichéd New Years Resolution weight loss plan, toss it out the window, and restore the date night flame. You may even restore you sanity!
