Scary food – Lisa on Point

ThinkstockPhotos 174272166There’s some scary stuff lurking in my refrigerator. It’s not my fault. Here’s why.
For the most part I buy the groceries. I cook the meals. My family can only seem to eat leftovers for one or two days. So the food sits and sits and sits.

When I ask why they didn’t eat more of it. I am told, “I didn’t know it was still in there.” “ I couldn’t find it.” I think my family expects that when they open the refrigerator door there will be some kind of announcement telling them what food is there. They can only seem to find something if it’s right in their face and that’s no guarantee.

On the husband front, I think that once they get married the ability to bend over and actually look for things in the refrigerator is zapped out of their brains. Unless they are going for the lunch meat. In that case they can find that and make a sandwich.

So, when I get fed up with the food sitting in there left to rot, I fight back and let it rot too. I pretend I don’t see those plastic containers full of food. One time I let some chicken sit in there for four weeks. I wanted to see how long it would take my husband to throw it out. I even posted a picture on twitter. I would show it to you, but I can’t find it. Right now there’s some two week old salmon and broccoli in there. It does not smell good. But on principle I am leaving it.

I have asked my husband from time to time if he is done eating something and he says to me, ” Are you done eating it?” Well, yeah. I tried to eat most it it. I freeze leftovers and take them for lunch. I share them with my co-workers. Okay, you’re saying I make too much. Well, some things you can’t make in small batches like beans, soup and spaghetti.

Also, why am I the only one who can find food that is not pizza or ice cream in the freezer? I know why. Because no one else in the house is going to cook anything from scratch. Having said all of that there is hope for my oldest daughter. Now that Paige is pretty much on her own and buying groceries and making meals she is not likely to let anything go to waste. When I visited her apartment in St. Louis where she is a law student I showed her how to make her meals last and how to preserve them. We went to the store and bought containers. I made her a big pot of vegetable soup and we froze it. Now she calls me for soup recipes and she is using her crock pot. Hopefully, when she has a family of her own, this will stick with her and perhaps the partner she choses will be be well-trained on leftovers and rotting food in the fridge.
