Fossil Field Experience W

Learn about fossils — where to find them, how to identify them and what they can tell us about the past at a program at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons.

Fossil Field Experience WThe Fossil Field Experience will be held Saturdays May 20, June 17, July 15, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, and Oct. 21.

The largest exposed seam of Miocene fossils in North America is in Calvert County at Calvert Cliffs. This explains why even the casual beachcomber finds fossilized shark teeth that are millions of years old. Learn more about this remarkable natural resource, and what it can teach you about our prehistoric past at the Fossil Field Experience.

Participants will begin the day at the Cove Point Lighthouse at 9 a.m. and will learn how to find and identify fossils with the assistance of a trained expert. From 9:30 to approximately 11:30 a.m., participants will explore the beach to search for fossilized shell, bone, and sharks’ teeth. The experience will continue after lunch at 1 p.m. at the Calvert Marine Museum for a discussion of the fossil finds and to explore the Paleontology Hall.

The program is open for ages 8 and older. Cost is $20 per person and includes museum admission. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and registration is required. Bring a bag lunch or plan to eat at a nearby restaurant. For details and to register, contact Melissa McCormick at 410-326-2042 ext. 41, or visit the Calvert Marine Museum’s website,
