There’s a secret Grandparents’ Society that I’m just learning about. I had no idea there was such camaraderie.
This morning I went to my usual coffee shop and just had to show the barista my most recent picture of Reed. Even though all you can see in the photo is a colorful blanket and her little circle of a mouth, we owed and awed. Then a guy behind me, completely unknown to either one of us, pulls out his cell phone and shows us a picture of him with his 5-year-old grandson. There was more grandparent enthusiasm all around.
Then not to be outdone, my friendly barista showed us a video of her 4-year-old grandson running track. He’s cute as he can be and only wants to snuggle with grandma when his mom isn’t around to watch.
Even Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan admitted in a recent interview that she had no idea why her friends were always talking about their grandchildren and showing pictures until, that is, she became a grandmother.
Who knew there was this secret Grandparent Society with so much pride and love to go around? Not a single person was embarrassed to show off pictures of their grandchild and gush over the photos of others. We didn’t really know one another and there we were sharing photos of our most precious thing, our grandchildren.
I know I’ve only been at this for a couple of weeks, but so far I’m liking this grandparent thing.
