We are big fans of Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro. This past year we had season passes and enjoyed visiting the park all summer long. We snagged season passes again for next year and decided to try out their Holiday in the Park for the first time.
We ended up going on an un-seasonally warm Sunday afternoon in mid-December. The park opened at 2:00 p.m. and the parking lot was almost empty when we arrived. Large portions of the park were closed off for the season, but the kids enjoyed riding their favorite kiddie rides in the Looney Tunes Town. Everything was decorated for the holidays and all the characters had ‘ugly sweaters’ and put on entertaining shows for the kids.
There were a few fire-pits throughout the park where you could roast marshmallows from a s’mores pack that was sold at various kiosks and restaurants. We were able to purchase one using the “snack” included in our meal plan (which you can add to your season passes). Later I used our other “snack” to purchase a cup of hot chocolate that the boys shared. I used our meal plan to purchase a chicken strips platter that we all shared. It was nice to not spend any extra money!
At around 5:00 p.m. therer is a tree lighting show at the front of the park on Main Street, but we decided to be in the “North Pole” (usually Coyote Creek) area where all the buildings were covered in Christmas lights. It literally took our breath away when all the lights came on! We wandered around checking out all the amazing lights and holiday displays, but we all got very cold quickly once the sun was down, despite being bundled up with hats and gloves. We left around 6:00 p.m. and I was amazed at how full the parking lot had become. We hadn’t noticed it being crowded inside the park so there must be enough to do for all the visitors to spread out.
There were quite a few shows and areas of the park that we didn’t even get to visit, so I look forward to doing Holiday in the Park again next year! This weekend is the last few days that the park is open, closing after January 1st, so if you’re looking to get your stir-crazy kids out of the house for the day, check it out.
