Special events celebrate Annapolis Library’s 50th anniversary

The Annapolis Regional Library turns 50 this year and officials have planned a week of anniversary events Nov. 2-7 to celebrate. Special activities include a bilingual birthday story time, royal birthday ball for preschoolers, birthday bingo, musical performance and library technology event.

“The Annapolis Regional Library has been an anchor in this community and in the region for half a century,” said AACPL CEO Hampton “Skip” Auld in a statement. “Whether attending story times, working on school projects, checking out favorite books or using our technology services, the customers of the Annapolis Library have considered the building and staff at 1410 West Street a cherished part of their lives. We are grateful to all our past and present customers and look forward to serving many more in the future.”

Specific Annapolis Library anniversary events for the public

Can You Say “Happy Birthday” in Spanish?
Monday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m.
Enjoy stories, songs and rhymes to with the library a happy 50th birthday during a special bilingual early literacy story time. For preschoolers.

Flute Duets: A Musical Journey
Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
Two flutists who perform with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra perform a flute duet. For teens and adults.

Royal Birthday Ball
Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 10 a.m.
Young citizens of the area are invited to the Royal Birthday Ball for lots of frivolity, music, dance and crafts to honor her majesty, The Annapolis Library, as she celebrates her 50th birthday! Costumes encouraged. For preschoolers.

Library Tech: Then and Now
Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
How has library technology changed over time? Enjoy demonstrations of 3D printing, technology kits, Play and Learn Stations, iPad applications and eReading devices. What old equipment can we dig up from the library basement? All ages.

Birthday Bingo
Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.
Celebrate the Annapolis Regional Library’s special day with birthday-themed Bingo!

Library patrons also are invited to share their memories and complete a scavenger hunt Nov. 2-7.

As library officials invite the public to look back at the last 50 years, they also are planning for the future. Plans for the new Annapolis Regional Library are under way with the announcement of the selected architecture firm expected in the coming weeks, according to AACPL staff. Design of the new 32,5000-square-foot facility will begin in January 2016. The community will be invited to participate in community meetings about the new facility. The current building is expected to close in summer 2017 with the new facility opening in 2019.

“We look forward to providing the community with a truly modern facility that will serve their needs for years to come,” Auld said.

The Annapolis Regional Library is located at 1410 West St., Annapolis, and is open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. September through May.
