Spontaneous Quick Trips in Maryland

Summer isn’t the only time for exploring. A quick trip to a not-too-distant community can be just the ticket for getting the family together for a fun and inexpensive outing. Maryland offers lots of events during the fall as well as entertaining places to visit throughout the year.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum hosts the first “OysterJam” — a celebration of the Chesapeake’s most-prized bivalve — on November 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (and possibly beyond). The event takes place throughout this quaint Bay town and includes oyster and wine tastings, boat rides, live entertainment, oyster exhibits, and special dinners. There is no admission fee, but different charges apply to each business’ promotion. For more information, call 443-205-2185 or visit cbmm.org

Across the Bay in St. Mary’s City, the historic community showcases two days of what it was like to prepare for winter as a colonist on November 28 and 29. Hands-on activities, like the one pictured above, offer families an appreciation of just how hard it used to be to stock the larder before the advent of supermarkets. Each day runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, go to stmaryscity.org.

Who can resist a gingerbread house? Kids tend to marvel at a construction made almost entirely of sucrose, while adults revel in the nostalgia of holidays past. In Upper Marlboro, the historic house museum, Darnall’s Chance, opens its doors from noon to 5 p.m. on November 28 through 30 and December 4 through 7 for the 9th annual Gingerbread House Contest and Show. Local bakers compete for the high honor of winning the Viewer’s Choice Award competition. The cost to marvel at the edible constructions is $1. For more information, go to pgparks.com.
