Though Jacob Spitzer is just in 9th grade, he has had a storied career as a musician and a Boy Scout.
Jacob has been playing bass guitar since he was 7 and has been a member of the rock band Fast as Lightning since he was 9. The band, whose members met at the School of Rock in Annapolis, has played over a 100 gigs, including opening for the popular 90’s band Soul Asylum at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C., and playing such renowned venues as Rams Head Live, Rams Head on Stage, Baltimore Soundstage and many more.
In addition to playing popular covers, the band has recorded multiple original songs, as well. While many of the gigs they land are professional, Jacob and Fast as Lightning have made it a point to play as many charity events as possible to help the community, including for such charities as Walk for Wishes, St. Baldrick’s, SPCA, Walk the Walk, Make a Wish, Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Medical Center, and Travis Manion Foundation for veterans. Often, the band will donate any tips or proceeds to further the charity’s cause as well.
Fast as Lightning has become popular all over the region and been featured on the news and in various publications (including this one chesapeakefamily.com/family/ages-and-stages/middle-school/6985-local-tweens-form-band-and-rock-the-9-30-club). According to Lisa Anderson, the band’s affectionately named ‘Mom-anager,’ said in the 2015 article, ” We let them do their thing. The kids are just driven. It’s so cohesive.”
Jacob also has played the viola for his school orchestra since the third grade and has a been part of the chamber orchestra, as well, during all of his years at Severn River Middle School. His trio ensemble earned highest honors and made it to States twice, where last year it earned the highest adjudication honors. He also manages to earn great grades, give back to his community, and keep his life well-rounded.
Jacob is not only a rock star and classical performer, he also recently become the youngest Eagle Scout in the history of his troop and has achieved his Eagle Scout ranking at the youngest possible age as a Boy Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Jacob built an information kiosk at Spriggs Farm Park in Arnold for the park to display information to park-goers.
