Standout Students: Maggie Crawford

Maggie Crawford began volunteering for the Anne Arundel County SPCA in 2015. After a few short months, Maggie combined her two passions, baking and volunteering.

She soon planned and coordinated a bake sale fundraiser for the AACSPCA. Her first bake sale, in January 2016, raised over $200. Since then, Maggie has planned an additional seven bake sales that have raised over $7,000 for the shelter.

In addition to bake sales and weekly visits to the shelter to volunteer helping with the animals at the shelter, Maggie created a community outreach program called “Bedtime Book Buddies.” In the fall of 2016, one day per week was designated as a book hour. This hour allowed AACSPCA volunteers to come in and read a bedtime story to the animals at the shelter to help them settle in for the night.

The idea became so popular with the volunteers that Maggie decided it was time to expand the program to children in the community. The first public Bedtime Book Buddies premiered in January 2017. The program started with only six spots available to readers over the age of 8 years old. The sign-up would fill as soon as it was posted, which indicated how great an interest the public had in this event. The event is now offered twice monthly to eight children in the community, and twice monthly to the AACSPCA volunteers. This program has contributed significantly to adoptions, donations and sponsorships made by readers and their family and friends. Bedtime Book Buddies continues to grow, and Maggie is constantly brainstorming ways to make it a bigger and better outreach program.

Over her three years at the AACSPCA, Maggie has logged more than 750 hours as a volunteer. According to Emily Monaco, who nominated Maggie as a Standout Student, “Maggie is always at the shelter, either walking the dogs, cleaning dog runs, or leading one of many programs or clinics the SPCA offers.”

Maggie and her mother, Tricia, lead the team of parent/teen volunteers as well as coordinate the bake sales and Book Buddies programs. At school, Maggie is involved in the rigorous International Baccalaureate program at Annapolis High, but still shares her dedication, time, and a tremendous love for these animals who are in greatest need of help.
