Study finds increase in the number of ADHD prescriptions for children

PillsA study released June 18 by the journal Pediatrics shows a large increase in the number of prescriptions written for ADHD between 2002 and 2010.

The study by the Food and Drug Administration is titled “Trends of Outpatient Prescription Drug Utilization in US Children, 2002-2010.” It showed that the total number prescriptions written for children decreased between 2002 and 2010, but the number of prescriptions for children for ADHD medications increased 46 percent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the number of childhood ADHD diagnoses during the study’s time period, 2002 to 2010, has increased from 4.4 million to 5 million.

According to the study, also showing increases were prescriptions for asthma medications, birth control and topical steroids.
