Summer Afternoon—One Moore Thing

A mindfulness refresher in a summer of uncertainty…

The water is calm.

I can feel the sting of yesterday’s sun underneath me.

Aside from a slight breeze from the ocean, the air is still. Present.

The boys are fishing just out of my reach.

I can see them. Hear them.

The girls practice handstands in the water and point to dolphins rising above the surface.

They are just being kids on a July afternoon.

All feels so right with the world.

It makes me want to stay in this bubble and not turn on the news.

It makes me want to hold on to this moment for as long as I can.

Fleeting, peaceful, beautiful.

The wars of the virus and politics, distrust and hatred continue to rage on.

Ever present and constant.

But for now, they are just out of our reach.

I have learned to take our news in bite sized pieces, a headline here, a tagline and article there.

But I no longer give them permission to consume their darkness over my hours and cast shadows and fear like an itchy blanket over my thoughts

They no longer get to hijack our summer afternoons.

Fleeting, peaceful, beautiful.

You can choose to steer your ship to what you want to be exposed to

You wear a mask, you wash your hands, you remain vigilant, eyes wide open

But you also know you need sunsets and sand and deserve to feel what July is supposed to feel like.

We all sometimes need the reminder that in the face of it all, we need to keep on living.

Mindful. Present. Alive.

These are unchartered waters but we have to remember that we are the captains.

We see the storms and the horizons and we can choose the direction of the helm.

These are the summer days that we will not soon forget but if we steer them right, perhaps we may not want to.

Keep looking for the calm and I promise, you will find it.

May the feeling of a summer afternoon never lose its magic.
