Visit the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington D.C. and learn about all kinds of different animals.

tigersmithsonianAbout 2,000 animals from 400 different species can be seen in indoor and outdoor exhibits throughout the National Zoo.

The zoo is free and there is much to see and do. Walk the American Trail and see North American animals including beavers, river otters, gray seals, California sea lions and much more. Then head over to Amazonia and check out the tropical forest, home to free-ranging animals and a large aquarium with dozens of fish species. The Asia Trail winds along a bamboo-shaded path where you can see sloth bears, fishing cats, red pandas, clouded leopards and giant pandas. In the Great Ape House you can come face to face with western lowland gorillas and orangutans. Finally, stop at the Kids’ Farm and see cows, donkeys, hogs, goats and more.

There are feedings at various points throughout the day, and opportunities to talk with zookeepers about the animals. Check the zoo’s daily schedule on their website to see what’s in store for today. The kids can also ride on the Speedwell Conservation Carousel for $3.

Zoo hours:
Exhibit Buildings: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
