Visiting a smaller town for a day trip can offer something special off the beaten path—often just as fun to explore as the big city. We continue our list of Mid-Atlantic small towns to visit with Wilmington, Delaware.
Wilmington is a popular destination with plenty of things to do. Depending on your proximity to the area, it might be worth taking multiple day trips and trying something new every time.

The town’s busiest area for tourists is the Riverfront neighborhood, a trendy locale that sits right along the Christiana River. The area has many different restaurants and attractions for all ages. The beer garden Constitution Yards regularly hosts events including live music, movie nights and even ice skating during the winter, so there’s always something to look forward to. If you’re traveling with children, visiting the Delaware Children’s Museum is a must—it’s the state’s only children’s museum and features many play-based exhibits that are meant to spark children’s interest in nature, the arts, sports and more.
Just want to get away from it all? Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park offers a peaceful place to relax by the river and is a common spot for music festivals and other community celebrations. Russell W. Peterson Wildlife Refuge is another nice natural spot, serving as a wetlands sanctuary right in the middle of the city.
If you’re straying from the Riverfront, there’s still plenty to explore in Wilmington. Those captivated by art and history can check out the Delaware Art Museum or the Hagley Museum. Animal lovers can visit the Brandywine Zoo, which is home to adorable red pandas and other animals, both exotic and common.
