We continue our tour of Maryland’s counties with Howard County, only a 45-minute drive from the Anne Arundel region. Learn what fun activities you can do as a family, what to see and what role this county plays in Maryland history, from Old Ellicott City to a manmade lake.
Must-Sees

Spending a day in Old Ellicott City is a must. The historic district is home to many cute and cozy shops, restaurants and museums that chronicle the area’s history, including the Museum of Howard County History. Visitors to this walkable downtown area can spend hours browsing antiques and art at local galleries and unique small businesses, or grab an oversized milkshake at The Crazy Mason.
Visitors to Columbia will be sure to want to explore the Merriweather District, a developing downtown area, or go see a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion. If you’re an art enthusiast, check out the African Art Museum of Maryland. Though it’s tucked away in a shopping center, it’s one of only three dedicated African art museums in the United States.
Local Nature

Patapsco Valley State Park also stretches into Howard County from Baltimore County, but there’s even more to explore in the area. The Howard County Conservancy is largely maintained by volunteers and includes a historic farm property, gardens, forest trails and an on-site nature center with live animal exhibits. The conservancy as an organization helps tend to and preserve the land in the county.
The Centennial Lake Wildlife Area in Ellicott City is a 54-acre manmade lake surrounded by walking trails, playgrounds and sports fields. Visitors can even go boating on the lake. It’s a peaceful place to spend some time that still offers plenty of activities for kids and families.
