We continue our tour of Maryland’s counties with Caroline County, less than an hour and a half from the Anne Arundel region. Learn what fun activities you can do as a family, what to see and what role this county plays in Maryland history.
Caroline County
Must-Sees
Caroline County is a rural area with a small-town feel, filled with farms and orchards. Many of these farms do pick-your-own programs, so you can pick your own apples, flowers and more. During the summer, Smokey Cat Lavender Farm is a great place to visit to see lavender fields in full bloom and buy handmade products, and Outstanding Dreams Alpaca Farm is another popular farm destination.
The area also has a lot of history as an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and Harriet Tubman made some of her most remarkable rescues in Caroline County. Many local landmarks call back to this reputation, like the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. It’s a popular spot for driving and boating tours.
Local Nature

Nature is everywhere in Caroline County. The area contains several notable state parks, like Tuckahoe State Park and Martinak State Park, which offer relaxing places to camp and fish. There’s also the Adkins Arboretum, which gives visitors the opportunity to explore different animal and plant habitats and regularly hosts community events and outdoor art exhibits.
If you want a truly unique way to see all the nature that Caroline County has to offer, you can book a balloon ride with Delmarva Balloon Rides and see the entire landscape from above.
