Lancaster

Take the kids on a day trip to Lancaster, Pa., located about two hours from Annapolis, where there are plenty of opportunities to explore the unique and intriguing culture of the Amish.

LancasterStop by the Amish Farm and House, which dates back to the 1700s, for a tour of the farmhouse, one-room schoolhouse, and farm with goats, chickens, sheep, and cows. Families can also tour the 12-acre property at Amish Village for a similar experience.

Visit Central Market in downtown Lancaster to sample regional foods and buy souvenirs.

Another way to experience Amish culture is to enjoy a family style, pass-the-platter meal consisting of traditional Pennsylvania Dutch cooking at the Plain and Fancy or Good ‘N Plenty restaurants.

And it would not be a trip to Amish country without a ride on a horse and buggy, which the kids are sure to love.

While in the area, take the kids to Dutch Wonderland, a small amusement park for the younger set. There are plenty of places to stay nearby, including hotels and campgrounds, so make a weekend out of your visit and spend a day at this kid-friendly amusement park.
