Take the family kite flying
By Jamie Lober
At 9 months, Leeat Bernstein loves everything about kites. She loves books about kites and she loves it when her uncle, a kite flying fanatic, takes her out to fly a kite.
One of Eric Bernstein’s first childhood memories was his mom teaching him to make a kite with two wooden dowels, a plastic bag and a string tail to enhance the way it flies. When the Baltimore resident learned that he was going have a niece last year, he was eager to pass along his special interest. And his passion caught on.
“She loves the way the kite moves with the wind and feels accomplished as she holds the string,” says Elina Bernstein, Leeat’s mother, also of Baltimore.
April is National Kite Flying month and the perfect time to take the family to fly a kite. The Chesapeake Bay area offers plenty of open spaces and steady breezes. Be sure to read our story Six spots for kite flying in the Chesapeake Bay area to find them.
