For generations, “He’s an Eagle Scout” has been societal shorthand for a straight-arrow go-getter, but between extra-curricular activities and after-school jobs, ever-growing academic pressures and year-round sports, one might think that the number of teenage boys actually doing the work it takes to make Eagle — and it’s a lot — would be dwindling.

But while Scouts are taking longer than they did generations ago to attain Eagle status, the number of Eagles has actually risen over the past 20 years.
