The evolving job of school counselor
The role of school counselor has evolved over the decades to become more comprehensive than the “guidance counselors” of the past, who handed out college applications and worked with the most problematic kids.
Now a middle school counselor might have to work with a student who has anxiety about a new school year. She may be called on to explain the ramifications of bullying or mediate when two students are in a disagreement. She may get to reward positive behavior, celebrate academic achievements or advocate for a student suffering abuse. Or she may just be a shoulder to cry on when a student is having a bad day.
Chesapeake Family recently spent half a day with Lindale Middle School counselor Andrea Portnoy to see first-hand what life is like for a middle school counselor. Check out our story on a day in the life of a school counselor.
