The Go-To Tribe—One Moore Thing

We all know that our villages our imperative to the survival of parenting. I love my village. I need my village. I would bleed for my village.

This tribe has not only become a haven for me, but for my kids. They are the ultimate bonus in this life. They are the hand holders, the uber drivers, the comic relief and the constant reminder that we are not alone on this journey.

And then within that village, there are the go-tos. The best of the best ones. The ones that redefine loyalty. The ones that you question what you have done to even deserve them. The ones that you know you can call at any time for just the right situation—they are the go-tos. The go-to person for the flat tire. The one that will feed you tacos and tell you that you are beautiful. The one that will lend you whatever you need, no questions asked. The one that will watch your four kids at a moment’s notice. The one that will tell you the advice you need to hear and that you know that you have been avoiding. The fierce believer in you one. The honest one. The generous one. The tech savvy one. The funny one. The handy one. The let’s book the trip one. Some are the all of the above ones.

And sometimes we have the go-tos that show up even when we don’t ask them to. They just see. They just know. They know you aren’t going to ask so they see what needs to be done and they just do it. As far as the go-tos in life, they are the angels among us.

The friend and chainsaw wizard that sees the dead tree in your yard and chops it down for you. The sister that is in town and folds your laundry. The mom who picks up your kids from practice. The friend who starts your car for you and turns on the seat warmers for you in the dead of winter. The boss who checks in on you to make sure you are safe after a showing. The kids who remind us to dance in the kitchen. The friends who feed us, know where we keep the wine glasses, send us memes and prompt us to not miss our lives. The brother who sees the overgrown branches lining your driveway and without asking or hesitation finds the tool to do the work and when you see him at the top of your driveway, sweating, relentless, taking one more thing off of your to-do list, you can’t help but cry, so moved by the generosity of it all.

They are not just the go-tos, they are the soul openers. In a world that can be hard, that you have unconsciously built walls up to protect yourself against it, they have chiseled their way through it. They are the reminders that good still exists. They let the light in.

If it is true what they say, that we become who we surround ourselves with, then there is no doubt or question that I am the lucky one.

Here’s to the village, the go-tos and the constants.
