Presented annually for 27 years, The Living Christmas Tree is a spectacular production featuring the sights and sounds of Christmas! Each performance features dynamic holiday music–both traditional and contemporary–performed by a symphony orchestra and phenomenal choir singing from a 30-foot tall Christmas tree. The tree’s digital lightshow that accompanies the music is an exciting complement to the entire performance.
At the heart of the performance is a heartwarming drama. In this year’s drama, The Unlikely Christmas Shepherd, there is a robbery gone wrong, a case of mistaken identity, and a small church’s Christmas program. This poignant, and at times hilarious, Christmas drama tells the story of Collin Evans, a thief who robs a toy store and in desperation has to hide the money in a nearby church. The church is rehearsing for their annual Christmas play, and Collin is mistaken for a substitute actor and must play along. A young father still angry over the unexpected death of his wife, Collin experiences the warmth and acceptance of the pastor and small congregation, and his outlook begins to change. Will Collin be able to retrieve the money without being detected? Does he even still want the money? What will the church members think of the man when they find out the truth? The message of Christmas is made real as Collin comes face-to-face with real Christmas love.
For one hour before each performance, guests are treated to an outdoor live nativity that has been a favorite part of The Living Christmas Tree for many years. The whole family will enjoy seeing the setting of Jesus’ birth portrayed by costumed actors and live animals. The story of Bethlehem comes to life as the children view Mary and Joseph and the baby joined by sheep and goats and the beloved camel. The outdoor setting is completed by the singing of a talented children’s choir while you enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and cookies.
At the holiday season, Riverdale Ministries does not forget the needs of children around the world. Joy can be brought to the heart of a suffering child through the Christmas for an Orphan program sponsored by WorldHelp. It is a simple gesture that means more to these children than can possibly be imagined. Riverdale Ministries and WorldHelp are once again partnering to make boxes available at the Live Nativity area after each performance. These boxes can be filled with an assortment of school supplies, hygiene items, small toys, etc. and then returned to the church for shipment to WorldHelp.
From the outdoor Live Nativity prior to each performance, through the memorable music presented by the choir and symphony orchestra, to the meaningful drama and concluding with the Christmas for an Orphan opportunity to help others, The Living Christmas Tree has been called “the best family holiday value in the metro DC area” by The Washington Post.
