The reality that college is coming fast — FranklyStein

The girls had the day off on Monday so we went on our first official college visit and two things hit me. My oldest is actually going to go to college very soon, and college is crazy expensive.

These are both things I’ve known all along in theory, but the reality is now. She’s a junior. She’s taking the SATs for the first time on Saturday. And as I am typing this, she is trolling on Naviance — a college planning software — looking for possible colleges to check out.

In just three years, we will have three children who could be in college at the same time for three years. The sticker price of the school we visited on Monday was about $38,000, not including room and board. Multiply that by three, and we’ve got a problem.

So the plan is to visit a state school on Friday, her official college visit day as a junior. On paper it has everything she’s looking for — medium sized, nursing program, Division III swimming and a good distance from home. But the other day, one of her teachers scrunched up her nose when Maggie told her where she was looking. And that’s what started the trolling on Naviance.

“Should I put in cost when I’m looking?” she called to me from her room.

No, I told her. One can always dream. And if scholarships don’t come pouring in, chances are she’ll be perfectly happy at that state school — or one similar — that has everything she wants on paper.
