This is Dexter, he is a 5-month-old Golden Retriever who got the most likes on the Chesapeake Family Facebook page. The Tayman family of Pasadena made the trip to Pennsylvania to get him after 2 years of no pets and a whole lot of begging. Bridgette, 12, Sydney, 12, and Drew, 9, pulled their money together to pay for him, which proved to mom, Brandy, that they were ready for the responsibility of caring for him. After 5 long days of no name, everyone finally agreed on Dexter.

Finn is a 4-year-old Terrier/Alasken Eskimo Mix. He was rescued from a shelter in Pennsylania after Lorraine Heibel and her family, of Eastport Annapolis, saw his picture on Pet Finder. He’s a lazy couch potato unless he sees a squirrel, then look out, the terrier comes out! Heibel took the photo.
So ugly he’s cute
This is a picture of “Piglet,” Barbie Marzoratti’s 10-year-old albino Chihuahua. Barbie was working as a technician at an emergency veterinary clinic when he was brought in as a puppy. He was sick and the owner couldn’t afford treatment so the plan was to euthanize him. As Barbie was about to place the lethal IV, he cried out and it sounded like “momma,” Barbie says. She tried again, “Momma” was what he said, and when he looked into her eyes, she had no choice but to treat him and keep him. Unfortunately Piglet passed away this passed Christmas Day. He had many health issues and was diagnosed with a brain tumor last winter. He was given a few weeks to live but lived for nearly a year with little intervention and much love. Piglet’s nickname was Sir Licks-a –Lot because he loved everyone he met and licked them to death.
“Many people agree that he looks ugly, but he was the sweetest, most loving Chihuahua anyone could ask for,” Marzoratti explains. “For a little guy, he sure did take up a lot of room in our lives and hearts.”
Best dog and his pal
Sheryl Bergman of Shady Side explains, “Piper is our 11-month-yellow lab rescue from Tennessee. Reese is our 4-year-old adopted daughter through foster care. As you can see, they love each other.”
Best entry that was not a dog
This is Walter. He was adopted by Julie Yannone when he was 8 years old because his previous owner was a flight attendant so Walter was lonely. Julie agreed to babysit him for a week, and he never left. He is obsessive-compulsive. He loves to be brushed, but must be licking you simultaneously during the brushing. He weighs 25 pounds and is quite secure in his size. While Walter lives in Texas, his grandmother lives in Saint Leonard and volunteers at the Calvert Animal Welfare League .
Best story
Jackson Alford, 10, was adopted from Russia by his parents Cindy Meekins and Marla Alford of Trappe when he was 10 months old. He spent the first months of his life in an orphanage, receiving only minimal medical care and love. When he was 8 years old, his family adopted Finnegan from the Talbot County Humane Society. Finn is a lovable, Great Dane/pit bull mix who has a special bond with his boy.
Most personality
This is Buster McCord, he is a basset hound/pit bull mix who was adopted by the McCord family of Chester. He was supposed to be a foster dog from K-9 Lifesavers but “he stole my heart from the very beginning,” says Jennifer McCord. Buster loves car rides, carrying his bones around and playing fetch. He is a bit mischievous and very playful. He agitates his older sister Zoe, a shepherd/husky mix, by pulling her tail in order to get her to play with him. It always works.
