There’s something to be said for a weekend in Ocean City — FranklyStein

Ocean City, Maryland is not my favorite destination. But for the past four years we’ve gone “downy ocean” for a long weekend in June for a lacrosse tournament, and it’s become one of my favorite family trips.

I’ve come to realize that Ocean City, in small doses — even if it happens to be Senior Beach Week — can be a lot of fun.

Over the four years we’ve gone, we’ve never stayed in the same place twice. The first year we booked a room at the Plim Plaza on the Boardwalk, and that was a wild experience I wouldn’t care to repeat. (To explain briefly, the kids were introduced to words they had never heard before and learned what “drunk” actually looked like.)

The next year we stayed at a relative’s house a few miles back from the beach in Fenwick Island, which was safe, but too far away. That place may go down as the kids all time favorite because of the Xbox in their bedroom.

Last year we stayed at a condo midway up the strip. The price was right and it was practically beach front, but the next storm is likely to undermine its cracking infrastructure.

This year we splurged and stayed at a hotel right across the street from the lacrosse fields and just a block from the ocean. It was heavenly not to have to deal with Ocean City traffic and parking at the tournament. It was, however, a little “cozy” with three of us in a king-size bed, one on the floor and two in a pullout couch. But isn’t that what family vacations are all about? Closeness?

Read on for the highlights of the weekend.
