Time to get your beehive prepped with extra hair spray – it’s time for Honfest, a celebration of Baltimore and the women who make it unique!
HONfest is not your average street festival. Located in the Baltimore neighborhood of Hampden, HONfest is a celebration of the working women who helped make Baltimore – or Bawlmore to the locals, special. “Hon”, short for Honey, is a classic Bawlmer term of endearment. For generations, it has expressed the warmth and affection bestowed upon neighbors and visitors alike by our mothers and grandmothers.
The festival is two days of music – over 30 live bands, crafts, food and contests. Do you have a natural Bawlmerese accent? Think you’ve got what it takes to make your hair stand the highest? Get out some extra hair spray and start teasing so you can vie for the title of Baltimore’s Best Hon – as their motto says, “The higher the hair, the closer to God!” In addition there is also a contest for the Lil’ Hons, ages 3 to 7, and the Miss Honettes, ages 8 to 13. In addition there is an oyster shucking contest with a $250 cash prize for the winner!
HONfest runs Saturday, June 8, 11 a.m.-8 p.m., the “Block Party” is Saturday 8-10 p.m. The festival continues on Sunday, June 9, from Noon-6 p.m. Parking is available at the Johns Hopkins at Keswick garage at 3700 Keswick Road for $10, a short three minute walk to the festival.
