Tips for baby’s first birthday party

1Bday2WBy Betsy Stein

When Gillian DuVall’s youngest turned 1, she didn’t want to have a typical birthday party with a bunch of children her baby girl didn’t really know and activities she wouldn’t remember beyond the pictures.

So DuVall decided to throw a Pretty in Pink cocktail party instead.

“I looked at it more as a celebration for my husband and me, and the year we had been through,” says the mother of three from Annapolis. “Annie was awake for an hour of the party and … then it was a full-blown adult cocktail party.”

Annie did get to eat a pink cupcake and got plenty of presents, but there were no kids at her party, just adults.

DuVall’s idea, while creative and sensible, is definitely not the norm. If you are planning a first birthday party and are thinking of something a little more traditional, read on for some tips from Angie Hilz, party planner and owner of AJK Events in Arnold.

According to Hilz, there are four things to consider when planning a first birthday: who is on the guest list, where to have the party, when to have it and what activities to plan.
