A growing number of parents are taking advantage of the proliferation of GPS-equipped smartphones and apps to keep track of their tech-savvy teens.

The devices have names like Family Tracker, Find My Kids and GPS Tracking Pro, and supporters say their use by parents goes hand in hand with monitoring children’s Internet and social networking habits.

“There are millions of parents using these now,” says Tim Woda a Bowie a parent of three and co-founder of uknow.com, an Arlington, Va.-based digital company whose “flagship product,” according to its website, is “the world’s first Parental Intelligence system for the parents of digital kids.”
of the apps. “It’s a huge business.”

But many think tracking a teen is not a good idea at all.

Lynn Schofield Clark, an associate professor at the University of Denver and author of the 2012 book “The Parent App: Understanding Families in a Digital Age,” said tracking apps can be a poor substitute for quality parenting.

“I think these kind of apps really appeal to the paranoia and anxiety of parents,” Clark says. “The issue comes down to what do we want to do as parents. The most important thing is to build a trusting relationship with your child, and that’s the sticking point with me.”
