Truly sweet at 16 — FranklyStein

MaggieMy oldest turns 16 on Friday. I have to say, it’s been the fastest 16 years of my life.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was turning 16. I remember clearly failing my driver’s test at Mondawmin Mall inMeat16 Baltimore on my birthday and making myself even more depressed listening to my new cassette tape of Neil Young Live Rust on the way home. Luckily, back in the day, you could show up two days later and take the test again — which I did, and passed.

Flash forward 15 years to when I was married and desperately trying to have a baby. After three miscarriages, Maggie seemed like a true miracle to us. A week overdue, I went into labor on New Year’s Eve and gave birth to Margaret Hope Stein on Jan. 2 after more than 30 hours of labor. She was the baby we always hoped we would have.

She was a true sweetheart — sleeping through the night from day one and never crying until her twin brother and sister came along 20 months later. She was a bit angry for a few years (four) until she turned back into the sweetheart she’s been ever since.

Maggie isn’t your typical surly teenager. Although sometimes she’s loath to get out of bed to do something I’ve asked, she’s always smiling, sweet, helpful and fun to be around. Even through the stressful learning-to-drive period, she’s been nothing but sweet. Instead of getting annoyed when I’m clutching the car door or barking orders, she just smiles and apologizes for stopping too suddenly or drifting off the road. Sometimes I wish I could bottle her good nature and take a dose myself every now and then.

So happy sweet 16 to my little miracle. You are growing into a beautiful young woman and have blessed us richly in so many ways.
