Shannon Haddaway has always had an eye for the unusual. A worn antique chair or reclaimed door frame? Haddaway can transform them into something extraordinary.
“I can look at an old door and think of ten things to do with it,” Haddaway says.
The Annapolis area designer and owner of Twisted Sisters Interiors has been dazzling area homeowners for years with her ability to take a plain cabinet or unusual piece of salvage and turn it into something special.
“I’ve always had that creative urge. Even in college, I was painting furniture, constructing frames and making planters,” Haddaway says.
Indeed, it was in college that Haddaway built and sold her first farmhouse table, an endeavor that hooked her on building furniture from scratch. In 2013, as a stay-at-home-mom of three young daughters, Haddaway channeled this creative energy into building custom farmhouse furniture with only a handsaw and miter box. Despite her lack of formal design training, Haddaway’s eye for making something special from vintage and reclaimed finds quickly attracted the attention of friends and neighbors who encouraged her to officially open her Annapolis area business, Twisted Sisters.
Continuing to Grow
Originally opened as a consignment store in West Annapolis, Twisted Sisters quickly expanded to include larger design projects. Partnering with Adam Whitaker, owner of Annapolis Shopworks, Haddaway has grown Twisted Sisters from a furniture and consignment shop to a large-scale design/build firm that tackles kitchen and bath renovations, custom cabinetry and bespoke furniture.
“What’s different about us as a design firm is that we don’t have to outsource anything. We can take a client from consultation and design, right through the production process; nothing is outsourced.”
Despite the business expanding into new build projects, reclaimed materials remain at the heart of Haddaway’s designs. “I can see a vintage piece of furniture and imagine its new life as a bookcase or bar,” Haddaway says. “There’s nothing more wonderful than a piece of furniture made entirely of wood—you can’t buy that at a big box store.”
Bright colors, reclaimed materials, and one-of-a-kind designs are the hallmark of Twisted Sisters creations, and Haddaway pushes clients to be adventurous and take a leap of faith when it comes to their interiors.
“I love introducing clients to color and get really excited when people want to see something different and they are open to trying something new in their décor,” says Haddaway. “It’s all about making a happy space.”
These days Twisted Sisters is tackling everything from large-scale renovations to a completely custom line of furniture for a commercial client. It’s an evolving venture that has brought Haddaway a long way from her living room with her handsaw. Her girls, now grown, still occasionally lend a hand at the shop. “After twelve years we’ve come a long way, but I’ll never stop pushing myself,” Haddaway says. ”There’s always something new to create.”
