Use Your Screen Time for Good

The idea of a screen-free summer is attainable for some, laughable for many. If that idea seems completely out of reach for your family, why not use the screens’ power for good?

When you’ve got a rainy day on the horizon, or you need a fun indoor activity after a full day at the pool or beach, here are some cool ideas that will get your kids to use screens in a creative, productive way.

Make a Movie

Code a Game

flappyCode.org—Kids in grades K–12 can hop onto this website for free hands-on learning tutorials that teach everything from coding basics, to app design, JavaScript and HTML, all at age appropriate levels.
Lynda.com—Create a free account using your library card, and check out a gazillion different options for tutorials in whatever software your kids are interested.
Tynker.com—Tynker teaches kids to code everything from games to apps to robots with fun tutuorials for all age groups.

Bookend your Summer
Let your kids take pictures when you’re out and about, then make a summer photo book on shutterfly.com or other photo site. If you’ve got a creative writer on your hands, encourage them to write a story, then use storyjumper.com to illustrate it and make it come to life by adding your voice, sound effects and music.
