In today’s world, where you spend your money means more than ever. Regardless of political affiliations, we can all agree that supporting veteran-owned businesses is a win for everyone. Maryland has a thriving military community, and it should come as no surprise that those who want to support vets have a litany of options for all sorts of businesses.

Here are a few local spots that are worth checking out for those looking to support our nation’s heroes in their next endeavors after they have left the battlefields.

Heroes Pub | Annapolis
Tucked in West Annapolis, Heroes Pub is a neighborhood staple with 48 beers on tap, plenty of TVs, American bar food classics and some of the best vibes in Maryland’s capital city. The name of the lunch and dinner spot—which is open from 11 a.m. until late night every day but Tuesday—references servicemen and women, first responders and police officers, as do the decorations on the walls. The restaurant is known for its great happy hours and raucous environment for local games, especially anything involving the Capitals. Try the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich or the Fireman’s Steak Fajita Sandwich.

Scardina Home Services | Millersville
Aptly located on Veterans Highway in Millersville, Scardina Home Services has been a staple of the Anne Arundel County and greater Baltimore region since it was founded by World War II veteran Anthony Scardina in 1950. Today, the business is run by Jim Scardina—grandson of Anthony—but it still offers the same quality service for HVAC, plumbing, remodeling, gutter cleaning, gas line work, fireplace cleaning, washer and dryer repair and more. As a Better Business Bureau accredited business and a recipient of various awards from Angie’s List and other similar platforms, Scardina’s reputation is tried and true.

Pip’s Dock Street Dogs | Annapolis
One of the most beloved quick bites in Annapolis can be found right in the middle of the action, smack in the center of historic downtown. Pip’s Dock Street Dogs, referred to affectionately by its first name, was started by owner Ryan Lamy in 2006 and has been serving up creative, mouthwatering hot dogs, burgers, cheesesteaks and more since then. Veteran owned and operated to this day, Pip’s is one of the few spots in the area where you can still get a good lunch for under $10. There isn’t much seating at Pip’s, but its dogs are best enjoyed down the street by the water at Annapolis City Dock, anyway.

Bay Raider Outfitters | Havre de Grace
Whether you’re into hunting, fishing or crabbing, these outdoor experts and former servicemen will have you on any prey that you desire. The Bay Raiders operate up and down the Chesapeake, launching fishing and crabbing trips from Tydings Boat Ramp in Havre de Grace and doing sea duck hunts around Kent Island. Body boot hunts take place mostly on the Susquehanna Flats, but reach out to a contact from the company to discuss any other locations that you might have in mind. There are comprehensive safety briefings for newbies, as well as complete lists of things to bring along for anyone experiencing hunting, fishing or crabbing for the first time.

Albert J. Jackson Inc | Crownsville
Founded by Korean War Veteran Albert J. Jackson in 1967, the company that bears his name has built a reputation of providing affordable, comprehensive and efficient home repairs and improvements across Maryland. Today, Albert J. Jackson Inc. is run by Jackson’s son Tom, who served in the Navy from 1977 to 1981. He took over in 2007 following the death of his father, and has maintained the level of service that established the company as a leader in the local market. Albert J. Jackson, Inc. also repairs homes after storm damage, a service for which the company offer financing.

Kent Island Scuba | Stevensville
Offering classes in the Chesapeake Bay as well as more traditional dive locations like South Florida makes Kent Island Scuba a comprehensive community of divers as much as it is a store. Veteran owned and operated, Kent Island Scuba works with divers new and old across the state, as well as in Florida in collaboration with its sister shop, Red Anchor Scuba in Palm Beach. The Stevensville location is packed with gear from the best scuba brands and attended by knowledgeable staff who can answer just about any question that comes to mind. With a low price guarantee, Kent Island Scuba is worth investigating for any underwater adventure need.

Escape Proving Ground | Pasadena
There aren’t many activities more thrilling, stimulating and challenging than an escape room. If you’re interested in trying one out and want to support the military community, Escape Proving Ground in Pasadena is the place for you. A recent recipient of state funds through a program from Governor Wes Moore designed to stimulate minority, veteran-owned businesses, Escape Proving Ground offers a variety of experiences for up to 10 people at once. All rooms have open seating, but there is an option to upgrade to a fully private room for a fee. Fun for all ages can be found at this Pasadena business.

One Leg Up Pets | Laurel
With a diverse team of experts and affordable dog walking, playgroup and boarding services, One Leg Up Pets is a great option for anyone looking for a little help with raising their companion. Whether you just need someone to take your poodle on morning walks or a place to keep your terrier for a week while you go on vacation, One Leg Up Pets can do it. As a veteran-owned business, it received a grant from the same program as Escape Proving Ground. One Leg Up uses the Time-To-Pet platform, an online system that allows owners to monitor the pet’s activity, message the caretakers, submit requests and more.

The Big Bean | Annapolis and Severna Park
The Big Bean has been beloved in Annapolis for nearly 20 years, but only recently became a veteran-owned business in 2019. With a location on Bestgate Road near the Westfield Mall and another in Severna Park, those in the north and south of Anne Arundel County can access the store’s house roasts and grub. The Big Bean opens early and closes late, operating from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. For those looking for less of a caffeine kick and more of a refresh, try The Big Bean’s fruit smoothies.
