Maryland Food Bank
Perhaps one of the best ways your child can learn about the importance of helping those less fortunate is by volunteering at a food bank. The Maryland Food Bank, which operates from two facilities (one in Baltimore and one in Salisbury), provides food to Marylanders with the support of its volunteers. The minimum age for unsupervised volunteers is 16. Children between the ages of 12 and 15 may volunteer under the supervision of an adult or guardian.
“The Maryland Food Bank has a multitude of ways for families and kids to get involved in ending hunger,” says Deborah Flateman, CEO, Maryland Food Bank. “Kids can participate in their school’s Kids Helping Kids Food Drive, organize a food drive, volunteer in the warehouse (depending on their age), or give through our virtual food drive. Hunger doesn’t take a holiday, and helping doesn’t have to, either.”
Volunteer opportunities in the distribution center include re-packing donated food and products processed through the conveyor system, packing assorted food kits, packing health and beauty kits, and checking expiration dates. Volunteers must be at least 18 to work on the conveyor system.
