Annapolis Police Department Law Enforcement Exploring Program

Law Enforcement Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are 14 years of age, or are 15 years of age but have not yet reached their 21st birthday. The program helps youth to gain insight into a variety of police activities. Participants learn what police officers do, and receive hands-on training in a variety of police activities. In addition, they learn leadership skills, and can earn community service hours and have opportunities for college scholarships. The Caring Collection, Inc.

This nonprofit organization raises funds for cancer research and patient care at Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital by making and selling stained glass angels and sun catchers. Volunteers help make sun catchers every Mon., Tues. and Thurs. in the Annapolis studio. No experience needed. Volunteers, age 14 and up, learn the art of stained glass while creating the artwork to raise funds. Also needed are volunteers interested in marketing to help contact the media to promote sales of the art work. Extra volunteers are needed for the following special event:

  • Noon–5 p.m., Sat.-Sun., Nov. 5-6, 2011, Caring Collection Annual Studio Sale. The public is invited to the studio at 1692 North Harbor Ct., in Annapolis to tour the facility and make purchases of Limited Edition Stained Glass Artwork and Notecards to help The Caring Collection meet its fundraising goal of $1,000,000 of benefiting oncology patients. There will be musical entertainment on Sat. by Archbishop Spalding High School Students with Beth Hough, Director. Contact Bobbie Burnett for more information.

Historic Annapolis Foundation

Volunteers are needed in the areas of museum tours and education, horticulture in the William Paca House gardens, public programs and special events, membership services, and marketing. Extra volunteers are needed for the following:

  • 4:30–9:15 pm, Nov. 4 & 5, 20th Annual Annapolis by Candlelight. Private home owners will open their beautiful homes from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries in the Murray Hill area of Annapolis for the public to view. Volunteers, age 16 and up, are needed and will be placed in different rooms in different homes informing visitors about the history of the home and the objects inside, helping to direct the flow of visitors through the home. Each home is staffed by an HAF volunteer known as a house captain who will provide information about the home to volunteers upon their arrival for their shift. Volunteers are asked to work a single shift on either Fri., Nov. 4 or Sat., Nov. 5. To ensure all houses are staffed and ready to open promptly and to guarantee that shift changes occur smoothly, shifts will be from 4:30 pm–7:15 pm. & from 6:45 pm–9:15 pm. H.O.P.E., Inc.

H.O.P.E., Inc. collects and distributes donated school supplies, household goods and furniture, and clothing. H.O.P.E. is currently looking for assistance with processing (sorting, testing, reconditioning, pricing) yard sale items at the warehouse as well as help with warehouse cleanup. It is also seeking church or civic groups to sort donated clothing at its facilities. Pick-up and delivery help for donated items needed. Grant researcher/writers needed to help with fundraising. Help needed in seeking closed facilities for possible rental as well as donated retail space for a thrift shop. Donations of furniture, infant and children’s clothing as well as financial donations are needed.   •  9 am–1 pm, Nov. 11, & 8 am–1 pm, Nov. 12, Indoor Yard Sale. Volunteers are needed to help with set up, during,, and take down for the indoor yard sale being held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Linthicum.  
  • 4 pm–10 pm, Nov. 12, Quarter Auction. Volunteers are needed to help with setup for the event to be held at St. Philip Neri School Gym. Doors open at 6 pm. Games begin at 7 pm. Clean up will follow.

Junior League of Annapolis

This organization reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who share an interest in and commitment to volunteerism and community service. Volunteers needed to work on projects supporting children and families, to assist with fundraising, serve on board of directors and support other programs and services. Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning and maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. There is a special need for volunteers from Nov. 20, 2011–March 15, 2012 for assistance with the overnight housing (and feeding) of 30 chronically homeless individuals at the old West St. shelter building as part of the Winter Relief program. Donations of food, bedding and other items are also sought. Training for Winter Relief volunteers will be held at 5 pm on Nov. 10 at 10 Hudson St. facility. Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County FLEX Program

FLEX, in partnership with Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) is looking for a small group of volunteers to help with the preparation of small shipments of used books, such as those provided to members of the armed forces and Peace Corps.  B.I.G. is located at 2000 Capital Dr., Annapolis. October’s project will be held from Noon until 3 pm on Oct. 29.  A second FLEX project, in partnership with Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails, is also looking for a small group of volunteers to help with park maintenance at Jonas Green Park in Annapolis. This project takes place on Nov. 6, from 9:30 am–12:30 pm. All ages welcome.
