Washington, D.C. is the perfect summer daytrip for Maryland families.
Many of the museums are free and enjoyable for kids, and the outdoor monuments are a great way to pass on history and let the kids run around at the same time. The jaunt is less than an hour from the Baltimore/Annapolis area and spice it up by taking the MARC train or D.C. Metro.
From the National Gallery of Art to the International Spy Museum, there is certainly a museum to intrigue every member of your family.
Here are some great, free, Washington, D.C. museums that both kids and adults will enjoy:
- The National Museum of Natural History has everything from dinosaurs to gems, and their discovery room is great for kids.
- At the National Museum of American History kids will have the most fun using their imaginations at the Spark! Lab, a hands-on science and invention center and riding a Chicago Transit Authority car in America on the Move.
- The National Air and Space Museum showcases air and spacecraft. They also offer a great How Things Fly exhibit for kids.
After you’ve been inside a museum, let the kids burn off some energy running around along the National Mall. The Washington Monument is open again for tours and kids will love taking the elevator to the top. Also check out the Lincoln Memorial or the Jefferson Memorial while you are there.
