Looking to help kids in need get supplies for school?
Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties are offering programs for families, community members and groups to donate supplies to children in financial need. Here are a couple ways you can help.
Anne Arundel County’s Back to School program provides eligible elementary school students with new backpacks and necessary supplies that will ensure they are properly prepared for learning. Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services and Anne Arundel County Public Schools will pair those who wish to donate with a child in need. The donor will receive the child’s name, grade, school and list of school supplies. The average cost per child is $50 to $75. New and returning donors can register at the Anne Arundel County website, aacounty.org, or call the Department of Social Services at 410-269-4462. Last year’s program, provided 5,567 students with needed school supplies. Additional donations will provide eligible middle school students with supplies as well.
Prince George’s County is asking for help to collect 10,000 backpacks for students. Two more “Stuff-A-Bus” events will be hosted by Prince George’s County Public School’s to meet this goal. Events are:
- Aug. 5, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ivy Youth and Family Center and Saturday
- Aug. 12, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wegman’s.
The backpacks will be distributed at the Annual Back-to-School fair held on Aug. 26 at the Bowie Baysox Stadium. Families must register in advance to receive a backpack. Free immunizations shots will be given on site as well. Any donations are appreciated.
