Wearable electronic fashions and more at Anne Arundel STEM Festival

The technology of television, the science of boating and a wearable electronics fashion show are all part of the first ever Anne Arundel County STEM Festival being held at Anne Arundel County libraries and other locations all month long.

makeFashion STEMW“We’ve always done STEM programs in the libraries in October but this is taking it to a whole new level,” says Christine Feldman, marketing and communications manager for Anne Arundel County Public Library. “It sort of ‘stemmed’ from the statewide STEM festival in November. We wanted to be part of that but with a bigger focus on the county.”

One of the signature events of the county STEM Festival is a “makeFashion Showcase” Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at Westfield Annapolis. The event will showcase original high-tech or wearable electronic creations made by local residents of all ages. Designers, artists and developers have used chemistry, computer science, aerospace engineering, automotive engineering, architecture, industrial textiles and competitive athletic wear to create their products.

“It’s going to be edgy, classy, futuristic — nothing you’ve ever seen before,” Feldman says.STEM fairW

Other signature events include “Science of Radio & Television” Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Severna Park Regional Library, which will be presented by the National Capital Radio & Television Museum; “Dragon Boat Science” Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. at Annapolis Regional Library; and “Anne Arundel STEM Festival’s STEM Day” Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. at Glen Burnie Regional Library, which will include 3D printing demonstrations and more.

STEM Festival events will take places at all Anne Arundel County libraries through Nov. 15 when the statewide STEM festival concludes, Feldman says. For specific STEM events at area libraries visit the Anne Arundel County Library website.
