What You Need to Know About Celiac Disease

Stomach discomfort? Occasional diarrhea? Bloating and abdominal pain? If these are recurring symptoms  for you (or a loved one), then one possible cause is celiac disease. Also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy and celiac sprue, celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. People who have it are unable to digest food that contains gluten, a basic component in wheat and several other grains. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but it’s often inherited and more common in people with type 1 diabetes, Downs Syndrome, thyroid disease, and colitis. Unfortunately, there are no drugs specifically for the celiac disease and there is no cure, although there are drugs to help ease symptoms such as intestinal inflammation.

Celiac disease is primarily treated by adopting a gluten-free diet, specifically avoiding all food products containing wheat, rye and barley. Gluten is in a surprising number of things, even vitamins and medications — even lipstick and postage stamps.
