Memorial Day is much more than a three day weekend to kick off summer. It’s the day we remember those who have died while serving our country.
If you want to celebrate beyond the picnics, pool openings and parties, there are several ceremonies and parades taking place today that would be great for your kids. Check out our roundup of Memorial Day activities.
There will also be a private commemoration is being held at Fort McHenry in Baltimore to remember the Civil War Origins of Memorial Day, which the President is set to attend. Otherwise Fort McHenry is still closed to the public.
For other ideas to teach kids about this special day, check out Military.com’s post on Commemorating Memorial Day with Kids. It gives great suggestions, including taking cookies to a nearby veteran’s hospital, making cards for soldiers overseas and going on an online scavenger hunt that helps kids learn about Memorial Day.
This year, ideas for how to celebrate include placing flags around the neighborhood, organizing a neighborhood car parade, or virtually visiting war memorials in Washington, D.C. in 360 videos at https://washington.org/discover-dc-360.
