Family Movie Review: Innocence (PG-13)

Innocence ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 94 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The film is about a high school student who determines that something evil and supernatural is going on at her high school and targeting her fellow female students; virginity plays a central role in that scheme, as staying "pure" makes the teens more attractive to those preying on them. There is the slight suggestion that abstinence-only education is bad, but it's not really explicit here. Some kissing and suggested sexual activity, both for teen couples and parents; some language and discussion of drug use; a girl receives a DIY bellybutton ring; some teens commit suicide; and there are various stabbings, slashings, and murders, as well as visions of corpses and nightmares.

The young-adult-novel adaptation 'Innocence' is a dreary attempt at teen horror, all muted visuals and unmemorable characters.

Family Movie Review: A Girl Like Her (PG-13)

AGirlLikeHer ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 94 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The film is about high-school bullying; although fictional, it's shot as a documentary, which means that some of the content may be particularly impactful for younger viewers because it seems real. There is a suicide attempt; lots of cursing, including a few uses of the f-word; some physical pushing and shoving; and tons and tons of verbal abuse and harassment in the form of texts, emails, and videotaped interactions between teenage girls.

The overall effect of the faux-documentary 'A Girl Like Her' is sometimes overwhelming, but also somewhat redundant. There is power in some of the movie's messaging about exploring the motives behind bullying, but not in how much it repeats itself to get there.

MPAA Rating: PG       Length: 94 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 6+. The film is about a race of aliens invading Earth and separating a middle-schooler from her mother, and then an unlikely friendship develops between the girl and one of the aliens, an outsider from the rest of his species. Some bathroom-humor jokes, jokes about violence, and some slight danger from another alien race who supposedly destroys planets.

'Home' is pleasant enough, but its lack of distinguishing characteristics—in both animation design and narrative structure—are an undeniable problem.

Family Movie Review: Tracers (PG-13)

Tracers ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 95 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The film is a generic action thriller mostly centered on parkour, so there is lots of running, jumping, scaling walls, and other dangerous-looking stunts; some gunfire and some characters die; there's a discussion about sexual abuse in a character's past, some kissing and dirty dancing in a club, and the implication of an abusive romantic relationship; and some cursing.

With its focus on parkour, the action film 'Tracers' never stops moving. But it never steps in a good direction.

Family Movie Review: The Divergent Series: Insurgent (PG-13)

Insurgent ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 119 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 14+. This sequel to last year's 'Divergent' continues along the lines of the first, with a dystopian future where factions are fighting, innocent citizens are often killed by gunfire, there are numerous fistfights and some slashing with a knife, and some mental torture sequences. Also some kissing, characters are shown kissing without shirts on and then waking up in bed together after an implied sexual encounter, and some language.

In comparison with 'Divergent,' its sequel 'Insurgent' is a superior film, with better pacing, more exciting action sequences, and continued commitment from lead star Shailene Woodley. But the overall plot remains so convoluted and generic that everything else gets bogged down, too.
