Family Movie Review: Red Sky (PG-13)

RedSky ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): half popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 108 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The film is basically a "Top Gun" knockoff but set after the War on Terror, so there are various in-air chase scenes and combat violence, some cursing and sexist language, a love triangle with some kissing and an implied sex scene (a topless man and woman rolling around in a bed), and another scene where soldiers are stripped down to their underwear, including a woman in bra and underwear.

A knockoff of 'Top Gun' has to work a lot harder to supersede its predecessor, and 'Red Sky' can't pull it off. The film is badly written, badly conceived, and badly acted.

Family Movie Review: Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (PG)

PaulBlartMallCop2 ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): 0

MPAA Rating: PG         Length: 94 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 10+. Roughly the same content as its predecessor, 2009's "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," including lots of played-for-laughs violence, including fistfights, hitting old women, beatings, fights with animals, the use of a Taser, and a recurring gag about getting hit by a car; some kissing and the possibility of a teenager falling in love; some very mild cursing; and some drinking, to excess, by adults.

No one was asking for a sequel of 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop,' but here we are. Absolutely no one, not even in the film's cast, is excited about this.

Family Movie Review: The Longest Ride (PG-13)

TheLongestRide ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalhalf popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 128 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 14+. So much sex! Lots of sex. This is a Nicholas Sparks movie, so the same elements from all of his film adaptations apply here: two or three curse words; some violence in the form of bull riding and injuries caused by it, including a concussion and some contusions (that you don't see up-close); one scene set in the World War II trenches and some gunshot wounds; some beer drinking; and lots of kissing, a number of different sex scenes (including a longish sequence in the shower), and some implied (a woman undressing in front of a man) and shown (Eastwood's butt) nudity.

Another in the long line of Nicholas Sparks adaptations, 'The Longest Ride' is fairly average. The camera loves Scott Eastwood, but the movie's characters never quite come together.

Family Movie Review: God Help the Girl (NR)

GodHelpTheGirl ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: NR        Length: 112 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The film is unrated, but its content puts it in line with a PG-13 film: the protagonist is suffering from anorexia; some cursing; some kissing and implied sexual content (two characters talk together in bed, with the implication that they are naked underneath them); some drinking and taking of drugs; a few conversations about suicide; some jokes about sex.

The coming-of-age musical 'God Help the Girl' has some relatable, affecting moments, but for the most part its characters are underwritten and its musical portions exceedingly twee.

Family Movie Review: Furious 7 (PG-13)

Furious7 ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalwhole-popcorn-kernalhalf-popcorn-kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 137 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 14+. The film has all the same elements as the others in the franchise so far: lots and lots of action sequences, including cars driving off cliffs, cars purposefully smashing into each other, cars flying through skyscrapers, and practically no one getting hurt; a lot of explosions, gunfire, gunshots, and hand-to-hand fighting that looks brutal; some cursing; some kissing; lots of women walking around in revealing bikinis and some lingerie.

The 'Fast and Furious' films just keep getting crazier and better, and 'Furious 7' is an insanely fun bonanza. It's a relentless thrill ride that still manages to pull on heartstrings, especially in light of star Paul Walker's 2013 death.
