Family Movie Review: Big Game (PG-13)

BigGame ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 87 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 12+. The film is about an assassination attempt on the life of the U.S. President, so there is some violence, including gunfire, a plane crash, and some people who fall to their deaths; some cursing, language, and bathroom humor; and a subplot about a Finnish custom in which boys become men by killing an animal, so there are dead bears and deer with their heads removed. Not too bloody or gory, but upsetting nevertheless.

The B-movie 'Big Game' doesn't try to be anything it's not. It's just goofy action, a crazy plot, and a good time.

Family Movie Review: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (PG-13)

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 105 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The film is about a trio of high school friends, one of whom develops leukemia; there is cursing, crude language, and discussions and jokes about sex; teenagers smoking cigarettes, drinking wine, and accidentally getting high; one schoolyard fistfight; and a girl's progression through cancer treatment, including chemotherapy. There will definitely be tears, but perhaps not to the level of last year's other cancer-tearjerker, "The Fault In Our Stars."

Film festival favorite 'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,' about a high school senior developing leukemia, has too many hipster traits, but its emotional notes are legitimate and deeply felt.

Family Movie Review: Max (PG)

Max ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalhalf popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG        Length: 111 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 10+. The film is rated PG, but definitely has some violent content: a scene set in Afghanistan where a group of soldiers comes under enemy fire and one person dies; another scene where a person dies in an explosion and another dies from a fall; various scenes with fighting dogs, where two different dogs end up injured; a dog tries to attack a person; and some chase scenes, gunfire, language, jokes about race, and a kiss between two teenagers.

Young boys especially will love 'Max,' about a young teen who unexpectedly bonds with a military service dog. The feel-good film is wholehearted in its support of second chances.

Family Movie Review: Inside Out (PG)

MPAA Rating: PG        Length: 94 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 8+. The Pixar film is about the emotions running the mind of an 11-year-old, and her emotional ups and downs after a family move. The film is set inside her mind and some of the jokes about abstract thought and the subconscious might go over children's heads, there is some scary dream imagery with a dog split into two and a creepy clown; an implied joke about the homosexual heritage of San Francisco; the suggestions of romantic crushes and schoolyard bullying, but not their actual inclusion; and the death of a character, which will absolutely wreck you.

Pixar returns to original ideas with 'Inside Out,' a fantastically creative and deeply emotional film. It makes a strong case for the best animated movie of the year.
