Family Movie Review: The Vatican Tapes (PG-13)

TheVaticanTapes ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalhalf popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 91 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. Exorcism stuff is my personal "NOPE!," so I think this movie is more frightening than most other horror films, even if the content itself is repetitive for the genre: violence includes a woman being attacked by a crow, getting in a car accident, urging other people to kill themselves (including encouraging a man to smash lightbulbs into his eyes, which we see from behind), speaking in tongues, and contorting her body in bizarre ways. Also some cursing, language, and an allusion to prostitution.

'The Vatican Tapes' isn't a particularly creative entry into the exorcism-film subgenre of horror movies, but it has some solid, creepy ideas under all the typical stuff.

Pixels ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): half popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 106 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The film, about aliens who mimic the behavior of video game characters to attack Earth, has a good amount of violence (although it includes those video game characters, people are still killed, the Taj Mahal is destroyed, humans are taken as "trophies," and there's images from video games that include murder and blood); some cursing and bathroom humor, including a character urinating; some adult drinking, including drunkenness; and a disgusting amount of sexism, which is the film's greatest offense. The female characters are purely treated as sex objects or property, there are numerous sexual jokes leveled at women or concerning homophobia; and overall the tone is very misogynistic.

Every summer movie season brings another terrible Adam Sandler movie, and 'Pixels' is 2015's version. This inexcusable mix of terrible writing and worse sexism is one of the most repellent movies of the year.

Family Movie Review: Mission: Impossible 5 - Rogue Nation (PG-13)

MissionImpossible5RogueNation ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 131 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. Typical action movie stuff: Lots of hand-to-hand fighting and parkour, various high-speed car and motorcycle chases, and numerous people dying in mostly bloodless action violence, aside from the murder of one young woman that is also not bloody but is given more emotional prominence. Also a few brief instances of sexually themed material, including a topless woman seen from behind, and some language.

Tom Cruise is fully committed to the fifth installment of the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise, and 'Rogue Nation' benefits from that attention. The movie soars because of him – and oh man, is it fun.

Family Movie Review: Mr. Holmes (PG)

MrHolmes ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG       Length: 104 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 12+. Some smoking; some deaths (including a suicide, men who fought in World War II, and the mention of miscarriages) and physical harm, including a dangerous animal attack; and some disturbing imagery at the bombed-out remains of Hiroshima, Japan.

In 'Mr. Holmes,' Ian McKellen is nearly perfect as the titular detective, irritated with old age and concerned about losing his memories. But the film's final message is a cliched one.
