Family Movie Review: San Andreas (PG-13)

SanAndreas ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13         Length: 114 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. Definitely thrilling, and in a way that may be too much for tween or early teen viewers. The disaster movie is about what would happen if a massive earthquake hit a huge chunk of California and Nevada, and there are a large amount of deaths of civilians and bystanders (people crushed by debris, drowned, fallen into chasms, involved in explosions) that aren't gory but are prevalent and constant; also some cursing (one instance of the f-word); some sexual tension and a few kisses; some cleavage from various female characters; and a plot point involving a young child who drowned.

Dwayne Johnson carries 'San Andreas' on his impossibly broad, very capable shoulders, even if the thrilling, silly film never really puts its main characters in danger. Without that needed tension, the film is fun but forgettable.

Family Movie Review: Maya the Bee Movie (G)

MayaTheBeeMovie ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalhalf popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: G         Length: 88 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 3+. The film skews very young, with no language issues (although there are some jokes about "beehinds") or romantic subplots. There are some action sequences, like a faceoff between bees and bats trying to eat them and a battle between bees and hornets, but the situations all defuse quickly and often humorously. Not objectionable for toddlers, but probably best for 4 to 8 year olds.

'Maya the Bee Movie' doesn't break any ground, but the movie is charming. The themes about friendship and community will resonate with all, from young children to adults.

Family Movie Review: Tomorrowland (PG)

Tomorrowland ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG        Length: 130 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 8+. The film is rated PG, but it has a surprising amount of violence for a film aimed at a young audience. Guns are used to vaporize into nothingness various characters; a human is crushed by various falling objects; robots are beaten, crushed, shot at, and burned; there's a creepy scene with a robot skull still talking and working after being detached from its body. Also the implication of cursing (phrases like "son of a!") are used, as well as a lightly romantic subplot including an unrequited crush by one child on another. Also, one of the major ideas is whether the end of the world is coming, so that's kind of dark.

'Tomorrowland' often feels like more of a commercial for Disney parks than a movie in its own right, but there's an energy to the film that will enthrall. If only its themes about human worth weren't so problematic.

Family Movie Review: Poltergeist (PG-13)

Poltergeist ChesapeakeFamilyMovieReviewKernel Rating (out of 5): whole popcorn kernalwhole popcorn kernalhalf popcorn kernal

MPAA Rating: PG-13        Length: 93 minutes

Age Appropriate For: 13+. The remake of the 1982 film is similar to other recent horror franchises, like "Insidious," as well as the original: some violence, including supernatural beings/demonic forces/ghosts attacking children and adults; a lot of jump scares and frightening imagery, like a clown doll attacking a child, unseen forces controlling tools and using them to threaten people; and some grotesque stuff, like a portal to the world of the undead. Also some kissing, sexual references, cursing, and cigarette smoking.

This 2015 remake of the '80s classic horror film 'Poltergeist' doesn't truly distinguish itself from its predecessor, but a solid cast and good use of 3D technology make it tolerable, if not remarkable.
