Teaching parents how to talk to kids about guns and gun safety is a focus of the work being done by Dr. Abena Brown-Elhillali, licensed clinical psychologist with Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress.
The ages of your children will help determine what you stress when you talk to them about guns. When there are guns in the home, kids need safety instructions. Older kids need to recognize signs of violence when they are away from home, and strategies for how they can get themselves out of harms way.
Some kids may have fears about guns. Parents should learn to identify signs of stress in their kids and when to get their child help.
